Every great coffee begins with a good seed. At Culpan, the future of the plantation is decided in the nursery: a sheltered space where the plants spend their first year of life under constant care, until they are strong enough to be planted on the farm.
To ensure the quality of our coffee, our qualified workers hand-pick the best beans of the harvest. Not just any bean will do as a seed: we choose the healthiest, fullest beans, representative of the best-performing plants in the plantation.
Those selected beans become our seed and, with it, the plants of Culpan's future. The quality of the coffee that will reach the cup years from now starts to take shape here, in this first careful choice made by expert hands.
Once the seed has germinated, the young coffee plant stays in the nursery for a full year. During that time it receives shade, watering, careful monitoring of its growth and attention against pests and disease, in a controlled environment that protects it while it is still fragile.
This year of rearing cannot be rushed. It is the time the plant needs to develop a good root system and a firm stem. Only when it reaches the right size and vigour is it considered ready for the next step: being planted out in the plantation.
After that year, the plants that have grown healthy and strong leave the nursery to be planted on the slopes of the Santiaguito. They carry with them the best of the plantation's genetics and the solid foundation given by the care received in their first months.
The nursery is, in essence, an investment in patience. Every plant that leaves it represents years of future harvests, and that is why we devote so much attention to it. True to the farm's philosophy, patience makes the coffee from the plant's very first day of life.
